Hello Xframe, good to have you on these boards... For what it is worth, lieutenant Gatewood, who knew and met Victorio on several occasions, described Victorio as heavy set, and the man in the famous image does not look thick... so the man in the image may very well be another man... still I am not 100% sure...

Actually jeroen, the man in the famous Victorio photo is thick bodied. Look at the width of his shoulders. I do bodybuilding so I can tell this is true. Also please look at the full body photos of Apache scouts on this board. They are little fellows about 150 lbs, max. Also, the look of hatred on his face would be hard to fake, according to research, he is shakled in that photo. I believe the man is Victorio. Just my humble opinion.

PS, I have read both Gatewood books, and as I get old I don't remember every detail, I just don't remember him stating he met Victorio. Please footnote!!! ? Maybe he did, again, I'm just getting old. You are a bigger expert on Apaches than I am. I will defer to you!!! Greetings from Apacheria! Tiswin

Hi there Tiswin, it is in Lt. Charles Gatewood & his Apache wars memoir, don't recall exactly what page... Dan Thrapp thinks he is actually describing Nana, but Gatewood knew both leaders and I don't think he would confuse them... Victorio is also described as looking old for his age by lieutenant Sladen... But like I said, I am also not 100% sure (yet) it is not him... all the best from Holland! Jeroen

Today I found a product desciption about a book called:
The Apache Indians: In Search of the Missing Tribe from Helge Ingstad
In the lil summary this information is given:
"The Apache Indians tells the story of the Norwegian explorer Helge Ingstad’s sojourn among the Apaches near the White Mountain Reservation in Arizona and his epic journey to locate the “lost” group of their brethren in the Sierra Madres in the 1930s. Through Ingstad’s keen and observant eyes, we catch unforgettable glimpses of the landscape and inhabitants of the southwestern borderlands as he and his Apache companions, including one of Geronimo’s warriors, embark on a dangerous quest to find the elusive Sierra Madre Apaches."
Does anyone know about who the Geronimo's warrior is they are talking about?
Cheers

Fine image, never seen it before! I don't think buffalo, but rather elk robes... My guess is they are Mescalero Apache...

I also think they might be Mescalero, or Chiricahua. But did the Mescalero wear headbands and high moccasins like the men on the image? When I came over this image my first impression was that it must be a rather early photograph. According to the source it's from 1875, so it's not that old. Unfortunately, there is no info on who these men are or who the photographer is. The man on the right somehow reminds me of the Juh image, with the blanket wrapped around. I don't think it's him, but that's what came to mind.
