Jeroen: your man is CHATO (Apache Chiricahua) not CHAPPO. The photo was taken by Reed & Wallace in 1888 at Mount Vernon Barracks (Alabama).

I agree with you Charlie, Chappo was in Carlisle at that time...

Fillupe, I do have the large sized picture already. The lady next to Geronimo performed as "Little Wenona" in Pawnee Bill's wild west show. She was a main rival for Anny Oakley and the two ladies had little sympathy for eachother. As for the identification of the other Indian, I'm not sure, but he may well have been a Pawnee or a Ponca, for most Indians attached to Pawnee Bill's were from these tribes... at least in 1901. I am also not 100% certain about the general Miles identification. He and Geronimo met in 1898 at the Omaha Fair, but that went badly. Geronimo blamed Miles for breaking his promises and the nasty treatment of his people since the surrender in 1886. Most historians agree the two never met again. Also, in 1901 Miles was still active in the military as the ranking general of the U.S. army.

Jeroen - She actually performed as Princess Wenona, her real name was Lillian Francis Smith, she was not Indian, and she was married to my Great Uncle Jim 'Kid" Willoughby in ~1887 while they were both with Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show. Buck Taylor the 'King of the Cowboys' was the best man, When she died in ~1930, in near destitution, she was buried near the 101 Ranch. They place a beautiful monument, paid for by donation, on her grave in her memory.

Yes you are absolutely right fillupe! I got her first name Lillian mixed up and remembered it as Little... thus Little Wenona, but her real stage name being indeed Princess Wenona.
Charlie, I may well concur with your identifications, just wasn't sure about Kaytah and Martine...

Princess Wenona aka Lillian Francis Smith, her actual birth name was alleged to be Maud Fontannielo? This photo legends.websitetoolbox.com/file?id=809892 shows Lillian's father, Jim 'Kid', 15 yr. old Lillian and Buck Taylor ~1886 outside Lillian's tent.

Alexis in later life was a much bigger fellow and his hair thins. This is probably taken on his trip out west in 1872 - over the winter of 1871-2 and these are likely to be Ojibwe.

I agree with grahame that these are probably Ojibwe, although I can only connect Alexis to Spotted Tail and a number of Sicangu in 1872, have found no info he also visited the Ojibwe. Frank Goodyear says in his Red Cloud book that Red Cloud was probably the most photographed Indian leader... if so, Geronimo is certainly a good second...

Dietmar, I am not able to identify the group photo, the boy may be Thomas, Geronimo's grandson...
