Hello, recently I rediscovered some very old photos I bought in the pe-internet era. I archieved the photos in these days directly at a garage sale in the very north of germany from a farmer. Nobody knows how these cabinet photos of native americans from the beginning of the last century made it to the very remote countyside of north germany. I wonder if here are some experts with enough background to tell me a little bit more about the context of these photos. I will try to post them. You will see 7 photos on cardboard. Size: 16,5cm x 11cm The photos are made in the studio of JAMES W.GILBERT in NEW SALEM ,North DAKOTA. At the backside there are the names of the photographed persons handwritten with pencil in english and german: 1)BIG HAND 2)RAIN IN THE FACE 3)STANDING HOLY 4)BAD GUN 5)SPREAD FACE 6)STRIKES ENEMY (3 Persons) 7)3 CHILDREN OF - unreadable- Thank you for your support, Spearhead Attachments:

Hallo Spearhead,
welcome to our boards and Danke! Great photos, where do you find them exactly, if I may ask?
Spread Face looks a lot like Big Head, the Yanktonai chief. I´m sceptic about Standing Holy. Rain-in-the-Face is safe.
I think Grahame posted a handful of Gilbert photos elsewhere.
Viele Grüße
Dietmar

Thank you for the warm welcome. Dietmar ask for the exact location where the photos appear. I bougth them in the late 80ties in a antique store im a small village called WELMBÜTTEL. The local antique dealer bought in these day a lot in the area around because so much farms are closing down.

Great work; I wonder if he was selling photos made by his father? The Rain is a Stillwell, isn't it?

Hope you don't mind, but I'm posting the pictures in the Gilbert thread. It's interesting that several of these names (correct or not) turn up in connection to his father's photos

Spearhead, thanks, I was just curious. Welmbüttel in Schleswig-Holstein, I admit I had to google to find it. Btw, the Gilbert photos now can be found in the photographer section.
