Jeroen,
Interesting, I have never seen that picture before. Thank you.

Of the ones Dietmar posted for me, the third one is one of my favorites of any old Native pictures because its not posed. It shows his personality and that he was a fun guy. I have always found the Natives to have one of the best senses of humor of any people and that picture gives a glimmer of that. It feels real. I wish there were more like that.

It was normally the photographer's idea to pose them with a head dress and a weapon or pipe (sometimes the items belonged to the subject, sometimes to the photographer) so the photographer had a better chance to sell the photo back east.

I found the third picture at the Jim Gatchell Museum in Buffalo, Wy.

I'm not Cheyennes specialist but have idea about this photos. They may be created by C.M Bell at Washington, O.C. in September 1880 ???

WOODEN LEG (Kummok'Quiviokta). Born in 1858, Northern Cheyenne, O'mi'sis (Eaters) band.
The name is referred to his legs, very strong and untirable.
He belonged to war society of Crooked Lances.
In 1876 he partecipated at the battle of "Powder", "Rosebud" and "Little Big Horn".
In this last, he fought with very honour against Major Reno troopers, killing at least three soldiers.
In 1877, after the surrender, he was send in Oklahoma. In 1889 he was named scout at Fort Keogh. In 1908 he was baptized. He died in 1940.
