I would be very grateful if anyone could provide some information about Swift Dog ( Sunka Luzahan ), Hunkpapa Lakota. Have not found any details of his life so far.
If you have, please let me know.

I also got this request from a website visitor: Does anyone know where Swift Dog’s shield is now? Is it in a mueum/private collection? Where was the private collection that had Swift Dog’s paintings were stolen from? Thanks. Does anyone know?

When I wrote an article on Swift dog for "American Indian Art Magazine" the drawings were in the possession of Mark Lansburgh, a collector based in Santa Fe, NM. I believe Lansburgh must've sold them or at least some of them, because as I recall one or more are in the Diker Collection. They originally came from Paul Dyck's collection.

Hi Dietmar,
Just noticed that most of the photos on the Swift Dog page in the Oglala section of the main site are actually of/about the Hunkpapa Swift Dog, known as one of Densmore's informants.
The first two photos are correct that they are of an Oglala named Swift Dog, as is the one of his shield at the bottom of the page. That shield does not belong to the Hunkpapa Swift Dog - his shield is different to this one and to my knowledge no photos exist of it.
Interestingly, the shield of the Hunkpapa Swift Dog was one of four identical ones made by Jumping Bull, of which he gave one to his son Sitting Bull. A clear view of this shield is in one of Swift Dog's drawings in Ron McCoy's excellent article. And the exact same design is shown in many of Sitting Bull's own drawings.
Considering that he was one of the foremost historians of the Hunkpapa and left us invaluable information, songs, winter counts and drawings, I would say that the Hunkpapa Swift Dog deserves a page on the main site himself...
Short bio: Swift Dog (Sunka Luzahan), ca. 1845-1925. Hunkpapa, leader in Sitting Bull's tiyospaye. Father: Runs Fearless (not the Oglala of Bad Heart Bull's drawings), brother: Kills Enemy. Member of Sitting Bull's White Horse Riders warrior society. Gained many war honors against the River Crows in the 1870s and fought against the US Army at the Little Big Horn. Fled with Sitting Bull to Canada, returned in 1881 to Standing Rock, where he remained the rest of his life. Hunkpapa tribal historian, Winter Count keeper, informant to Frances Densmore.
For more detailed information, refer to Densmore's Teton Sioux Music and Ron McCoy's article in AIAM.

In one of my books "Adventures with rod and harpoon along the Florida Keys", published 1925, there is a dedication written in beautiful script as follows:
To Big Chief Zibeon on his birthday Feb 28, 1925 from his affectionate Tribesman Henry (Chief Swift Dog)"
Is this of interest to anyone?

I was at the Minikahda Country Club in Minneapolis, MN. There is a photo of Swift Dog and his shield is also displayed in a case. I did not see any written history displayed about him and tried to look it up and found your forum.
