I know we've been here before, but could we please could we try and identify the men in this photo? The 'official' identification is Back row - Dent Roberts (St Louis Post Dispatch), Rocky Bear, Good Voice, Two Lance, Two Strike, W. F. Cody (standing on a box?), Crow Dog, Short Bull, Major John Burke. Front Row: Thunder Hawk, American Horse, John B. McDonough (New York World)), Young Man Afraid of his Horses, Kicking Bear, J. G. Worth. In front of American Horse is the adopted son of Two Stike, George Crager. Now, I know it's Rocky Bear, Two Strike, Cody, Burke, Crager, McDonough (which I've seen given as Macdonald), Roberts and Crow Dog, but who are the rest? Rocky Bear Crow Dog and High Hawk(?) Here are some closer shots taken from the other photo taken of this group at the same time (though Bent and Worth are absent from this one) In close up: Here's a photo also by Grabill or one of his associates that shows Cody and Burke with various newspaper correspondents, including Roberts and, at the far right, Worth: Worth in close up:

Granted, it's hard to make out, but I've always thought the man speaking in the centre of the circle is the man with the caped coat and shoulder length hair, theird from the left in the top Cody photo... Grand council of friendly and hostile Indian chiefs at the Pine Ridge Agency; Kicking Bear speaking

Grahamew,
seeing as you didn't get any response to a few of your last posts I thought I'd cheer you up by responding that I totally agreeing with you about the man in the capped coat being the same man as the one in the Cody photograph.
Apart from the distinctive coat, { which prompts me to wonder were the photographs in question taken around the same time?} and the actual length of his hair, there is something about the way the mans hair sits on his head that persuades me that its the same man. That said, it doesn't get us any nearer to naming him or the others though.
Incidentally, did you enlarge those close ups from those photos yourself. They are wonderfully sharp and great portraits of whoever they are in their own right.
Lastly, for what its worth I've always had my doubts about the two men in the Front Row: named as Young Man Afraid of his Horses and Kicking Bear being a correct identification. If anything the man in the hat and the headscarf looks a little more like Kicking Bear, but even then I'm not 100% persuaded.
best wishes Shan

I took them from here: digital.denverlibrary.org/The images can now be blown up and some are crystal clear - not the one of 'Kicking Bear' addressing the council, however. This is as good as it gets: Here's another Grabill or Trager or Moreledge photo that claims to show Kicking Bear - but it's High Hawk. The unidentified gentleman holding hands with two Strike is his adopted son, George Crager, who worked with Cody on the 1891-2 Wild West Show tour: Left to right: J. McDonough (reporter), Good Lance, Big Talk, Frank Grouard, 'Kicking Bear', Two Strike, George Crager, Major Burke, unidentified. That's assuming the other identifications are correct! Closer: Edit: Here's a more complete version and the unidentified man on the far right is erroneously labelled Short Bull!!!: Here's another photo (Trager? Grabill? Moreledge?) that does show Kicking Bear, but he's mislabelled as Big Talk! Left to right according to what's written on the print: Good Lance, Big Talk, High Hawk, Two Strike

I don't know about you, but I'm certain that the second man from the left who is named as Big Talk, is in fact Kicking Bear.
As to the others, Two Strike is correct, but I dont recognise the other two.

Happy new year and thanks to everyone who answered my question, which as usual leads on to yet more questions
grahamew, sorry, I see from you're reply that we've been through this before already some time back. Must be getting old, the memories failing.
As to the man kneeling in front wearing a hat, I'm still unsure if it is Kicking Bear or not. In some ways it does have a feel of him, and let's face it, we can all look a bit different to the camera if we are in a certain mood, depressed, angry or just plain bored. But, Kicking Bear has such a distinctive face, that I think on balance it's probably not him.
Using the same argument, i.e., angry, bored or just thinking of something else, I think the man to the left of Major Burke is probably Young man afraid not looking like his usual self.
With regards to the marvellous close ups you sent August 16th 2011, { how do You do It, they are perfect? } if you did give the names of the individuals back then, they have been replaced with little blue boes with a ? Back then the man second from the left was identified as Good Lance I think, but has now been i.d as High Pipe. I haven't heard anything about this man, so is there any further information?
grahamew, My last question is one I've bored you with before. Many years back you posted a third photo of Low Dog sitting with others such as Gall, Rain in the Face and Running Antelope, shortly after they came back from Canada. I've tried everything I could to blow the image up to get a bigger, better resolution, but have failed miserably. Have you had any better luck?
Thanks for your help, Shan

I'm not the greatest at identifying faces. But the fellow with the scarf wrapped round his head - and jaw - has been identified as Young Man Afraid of His Horse. Not without some doubt on these boards. However, here's my twopence worth - late photos of Young Man Afraid (remember he died in 1893) show him with a sunken mouth as if he'd lost his teeth. Is the scarf symbolic of a man struggling with the weight of the post-Wounded Knee world - and the toothache? Just an idea.

Well, I'm working with Dietmar's i.d. of the man as High Pipe, who, to me, is the man with the caped coat addressing the 'Grand Council' in the post above. I don't think that the man with the scarf is Man Afraid. It wouldn't be the only occasion Trager and Co. misidentified someone as YMA! He looks too full-lipped when compared with other photos taken by Trager and Co. - which reminds me, I'm sure I read recently that Cross was one of the photographers whose images were used by Northwest Photo Co., Chadron so some of the famous images taken around this time are his. Could've dreamt it, of course! The real Kicking Bear, YMA and Standing Bear, by Trager and/or associates. Though looking at these image, it is possible, I suppose... I see what you mean about the sunken mouth. His face seems to be intact, as it were, at this time. It does look like he's had quite a lot of teeth pulled. On an unrelated note, Shan, this is the best I can do:

grahamew, Sorry for the confustion, the image you posted, for which many thanks, is 1 of 2 well known photographs that taken that day. There was a third, which I think you posted many years ago, which I never seen anywhere other than your post.
In the third image, the same five Indians, Rain-in the Face, Running Antelope, Low Dog, Cralwer? and Gall sit in the front on chairs, but this time they are joined by a number of officers and women who maybe their wives standing behind them, and, lying on the grass in the front is what looks like a young white boy in a check shirt .
The image I have is very very pixilated and I never been able to do nything with it.
If someone can tell me how to post an image, I'll try and post it bad as it is. Thanks again.
Shan

Regarding High Pipe: He was a Rosebud delegate to Washington in 1891, when his picture was taken in several group photographs. There are also two photos taken in his later years, apparently again as a delegate. High Pipe 1891 High Pipe 1891 High Pipe 1891 High Pipe 1909 High Pipe 1909 High Pipe 1909 If someone has more information about High Pipe, we should create an own thread, I think.
