Hei! Always you can't count on what is said in a caption. In this case there is wrong info. The photo in question has been taken Aug. 7, 1874. Charley Reynolds can't be one of the men in the picture, because "Lonesome" Charley had left for Fort Laramie with the message from Custer some days ago. Instead there is Pvt. John Noonan in the picture. Regards Jari

This photo reminded me of a book that may interest some members: "Exploring with Custer -- the 1874 Black Hills Expedition", by Ernest Grafe and Paul Horsted. Photographer William Illingworth recorded the expedition. Grafe and Horsted reproduced diaries and maps along with the old photos and then -- amazingly -- went out and found the locations where Illingworth shot the photos and took modern day shots. The Custer/bear shot is on page 256. The photo in the book is a slightly different pose than the one posted here. I wasn't aware that there were multiple photos.
