Baptiste Garnier aka Little Bat was a half-breed and scouted for the U.S. Army. I think to remember some called him the best scout that ever was. Here´s a beautiful portait of him with a war-bonnet: Let´s try to assemble some facts and photos of Little Bat.

This is a well known photo, but anyway... In his book Tales of the 04 Ranch R, H.J. Cook provides some information about Little Bat's sister, Eulalie "Lalie" Garnier, but very little or nothing about him.

THE DEATH OF BAPTISTE GARNIER The Chief of Fort Robinson Scouts, Baptiste "Little Bat" Garnier was shot by James Haguewood, bartender, in this building known as Dietrich's Saloon, December 16, 1900. "Little Bat" died near the center of the street intersection about 3 a.m. and was buried at the Fort Robinson cemetery. The record of death and interment states: "Deceased was brutally shot while wholly unarmed and without cause or justification." On a plea of "self-defense," Haguewood was acquitted. Garnier served his country well in bringing peace to the frontier. from: www.nebraskahistory.org/publish/markers/texts/death_of_baptiste_garnier.htm

Speaking of Eulalie Garnier, I remember having read about her marrying the (in)famous Frank Grouard (will check the source of this info). Has anybody additional facts about the Grouard/Garnier connection?

Has anybody additional facts about the Grouard/Garnier connection? Hello, Both men were scouting for Crook in 76’. Bat served as an army scout for Merritt in 1872, Crook in 1876, and at various time thereafter, ”barely escaping” in the massacre at Wounded Knee in 1891, he having been interpreter in negotiations seeking to forestall the fight and having been caught unarmed in the melee. Welcome Jari! Good to have another member from Finland. Btw, where´s Frank? Jinlian, I found Eulalie Garnier mentioned by Richard Hardorff ("The Death of Crazy Horse", page 31): "Grouard´s third wife was Eulalie Garnier, the sister of Baptiste Garnier who was known on the frontier as Little Bat. Nicknamed LaLie, she had been married to John Hunton, a roadhouse operator on the Chugwater in Wyoming. She had left him about 1886 and had married Grouard; but this marriage failed, too, and she eventually settled on Pine Ridge with somene else." Hardorff gives as source John Hunton´s Diary, Vol. III (Lingle, 1960), pp. 47-8

Harold Cook confirms the marriage with Hunton, but says that it was Hunton to leave Lalie ("like many other traders who had thrown their Indian wives away"); Cook doesn't mention her marrying Grouard, but says that she settled, more or less permanently, at the Cooks' 04 Ranch. She married one last time with a fellow named "Pete" - Cook doesn't give his family name - but eventually divorced him too.
p.s. nice to see you back, Jari. How's your book going?

Thanks for asking about my book. It's not the best seller of the year ;D It has been sold as expected - only about 300 copies. (As you know) there are only 5 million inhabitants in Finland, and much less interested in Custer and LBH. Best Regards Jari

I have been asked in a private message about the first photo in this thread, which shows Baptiste Garnier with a war-bonnet. I scanned it from the book by Joe De Barthe about Frank Grouard, but there is no additional information about the picture. Does anyone know who the photographer might be or when it was taken? There is one more portrait of Garnier in the De Barthe book, again without date or anything: ...and more photos of him from the net:

Who are the women in the picture. Any Mousseau women, such as Julia, Sophie Mousseau? Was Baptiste married to a Julia Mousseau(x)?
