This was posted on the LittleBighorn.info Message Boards. Please identify him if you can. Diane A friend ran across this family photo that belonged to his Great-grandfather (the man on the left). He was involved in land deals with Native Americans in the 19th century. Does anyone know who he's standing next to? I was wondering if it might be American Horse (I could be way off). Thanks!

He looks a lot like Red Cloud. The face (and expression), the nose and wrinkles (match up exactly). Not sure about the eyes though.

aspis, I would agree - Wandutah or Wanduta (Red Arrow?) According to a canadian website a "canadian Sioux": Wanduta (Red Arrow), from the Sioux Valley Dakota Nation, in the Oak Lake area, Manitoba, ca. 1913 And according to the book "Colour-coded: A Legal History of Racism in Canada, 1900-1950" by Constance Backhouse was Wanduta a heyoka, who "sponsored dances" (Grass dance, Give-Aways etc.), which were prohibited in Canada. Wanduta's home community were the Oak River Dakotas. Wanduta was a traditional Sioux who was degraded by some of his fellow "progressive" Dakotas. Others looked upon him as an esteemed leader. In January 1903 Wanduta was arrested and charged with "hosting a dance"! He was tried and sentenced to 4 month hard labour - without a legal counsel and without hearing a single witness. BTW - the white man could be the Canadian politician Clifford Sifton (1861 - 1929) who supported a petition to pardon the heyoka.

Do we know who the great-grandfather is and where he lived. Gregor's comment is interesting, because my first thought was that it was someone from a Canadan tribe. I'm not sure why. I definitely don't think it's Red Cloud, American Horse, etc.
